CHAPTER TEN

The Pixie Mixie was still open when I was finally able to politely extricate myself from Delphelius’s harrowing tales of his school days. I didn’t think he even noticed that I was leaving. He would’ve bragged about his exploits to a wall, and indeed, that was what he continued to do as Atlas and I left the pub and walked the short distance to the apothecary.

“Not the nicest of people,” Atlas said.

“Certainly not the nicest. I’m sure if I poked around a little bit more, we’d find some reason for it, though. Maybe his father was mean to him when he was little.”

“You think that would change the way the people he bullied felt about him?”

I sighed. “Probably not.”

Since I’d enjoyed an early dinner with Stu, the sun had hardly set by the time Atlas and I reached the Pixie Mixie and stepped inside to the delicate sound of a tiny bell over the door.

Kayleigh Lytefoot, a beautiful fairy with golden hair and a generous smile, fluttered her wings and welcomed us in. “Dahlia! So nice to see you. Let me know if I can help you find anything. Oh! We restocked the sun-dried wormwood, if you still need it for your training.”

“Maybe soon. I’m actually here to, um, ask you about something.”

She fluttered higher above the ground so that we were at eye level once I reached the checkout desk. “Of course. Is this”—she narrowed her eyes slyly—“something to do with an ongoing investigation? Has Nora already passed the torch to you? No, of course she hasn’t. She’s far too addicted to the thrill of a case.”

I laughed. “I think you’re right about that, but she’s been swamped down at Medium Rare.”

“So this is about a case. Delphelius Twench, maybe?”

I’d been hoping I didn’t have to disclose that, because I didn’t want the questions I needed to ask to paint anyone as a suspect when they were hardly even a person of interest. “I’d rather not say,” I replied, and Kayleigh nodded knowingly. “What I’m wondering about is if Jaymes Hardy has been in here lately, and if so, what he was shopping for.”

“Is he a sus—” She caught herself, remembered she was supposed to be pretending that this wasn’t about the Twench case, and continued, “I’ve seen him in here lately, but I don’t usually disclose purchases to people. I like my customers to know that what they buy here, and what potions those supplies imply they might be making, are completely private.”

“Could you at least tell me if, in your opinion, the items Jaymes bought the last time he was in here are the kind that would be used for some sort of spell, or if they were more everyday essentials for medicinal uses?”

She chewed on her bottom lip for a moment, and I could tell she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how best to approach it. That was a good sign. At least she knew something helpful. I wasn’t great at being pushy,
